Background Checks

In many instances, a potential employer will run a background check concerning a job applicant. They do this for a variety of reasons.

One of those reasons is to ensure that the applicant is telling the truth. It has been estimated that up to 40% of résumés contain false or tweaked information regarding their former employment. In addition, there is frequently fabricated information regarding a person’s education history. Background checks allow a potential employer to verify that a person is telling the truth and did actually graduate from the school their résumé says.

Many government jobs require security clearance. Background checks are necessary in this situation to ensure that the person is suitable for the level of security clearance that the job requires.

A background check can contain a wide variety of information. It can contain anything and everything that the Fair Credit Reporting Act deems acceptable as background checks are a form of consumer reports.

As a minimum standard, a background check will verify a person’s social security number. At most, a background check will include an analysis of a person’s work history, a list of people that the person knows, and a full credit report. A background report can also contain a person’s credit payment records, their driving records, or even criminal history.
Background checks should be related to the job. For example, a bank would need to know if their potential employee has a history of embezzlement or theft.

Although many things can be included in a background check, school records and medical records cannot be included. These items are both confidential.
